A lot of people think that holding down a job, trying to get ahead and taking care of your family is enough and there is no need to worry about your life’s purpose.
That’s short-sighted thinking. Working out your life’s calling isn’t a luxury or escapism. If you want to live a more meaningful and successful life, you need to set aside some time and get alone with your thoughts.
Think about it. What do you really want out of life?
I think the chances are pretty good you don’t want to be doing the same thing, facing the same issues, twenty years from now. Do you?
As humans, we’re hard-wired to find purpose in what we do. It’s the way we find fulfillment, define and achieve our life goals.
Here are a few good reasons to find your calling.
- You will unlock your potential
Most people want to be the best they can be. I suspect you’re in that group.
How will you know who that person is and what they’re capable of unless you know your life purpose?
When you find your calling, you open up a whole new world. It’s about discovery and building on your God given talents.
What is your passion? What do you love doing? Chances are you’re already good at it. When your focus is on your natural gifts, they have a way of becoming your greatest strengths.
- You will create opportunities
More opportunities come your way when you know your life purpose. Success happens when “preparation meets opportunity”. We live in a big world that is constantly changing. That means that nothing is going to stay the same.
When you begin to live intentionally, you’ll find that your whole mindset changes. You open yourself to more opportunities than you could ever imagine. What was once impossible becomes probable.
Baseball great, Yogi Berra, once said that when you come to the fork in the road, take it. You’ll take the right one and that’s the magic.
Don’t believe me? Think back to times in your life when everything just seemed to “fall into place” or when you were in the right place at the right time.
Do yourself a huge favor, practice saying yes to the things that feel good and see where that energy takes you.
- You will have an impact on the world
You’ve probably heard the phrase ‘be the change you want to see in the world.’
Finding your life’s purpose starts with the decision to find out what it is. Choose to do what matters most to you, what makes you feel good, and you will change things for the better.
If you want to have a positive impact on the world, you need to a life that is in sync or aligned with your values and purpose. Maybe you won’t change the world overnight – that’s OK.
You will start to see the dominoes start to fall into place. Starting with you affects your family, which influences your neighborhood which impacts your city.
This chain of positive impact will inspire others to do the same.
You have a choice – be part of the problem or be part of the solution.
I’ll close this section with this – I had the opportunity introduce my son to Michael Jordan when he was younger. Michael was at the peak of his career and my son was in complete awe of him. Kenneth said to Michael that he wanted to be like him one day.
Michael said that was the wrong way to think. He said your goal isn’t to be like Mike – it’s to be better than Mike.
